The Daily Mail recently reported the case of an 11-year-old boy who has been allowed to undergo a sex change using sex hormone-blocking medication. The adopted boy, Thomas, lives in Berkeley, California, and has lesbian Jewish guardians. He has now adopted the name "Tammy". He began his hormone-blocking "therapy" at the age of eight and dresses in female clothes.
While it may disturb some readers that a child's body is interfered with at such a young age, this action represents a clear break from psychiatric tradition. In other words: "gender-confused" children are being treated according to an ethically reprehensible double-standard.
The rationale is that he had threatened to mutilate his genitals in the event that his guardians did not allow him to have sex-change surgery:
"[Tammy's guardians] Pauline Moreno and Debra Lobel warn that children with gender identity disorder forced to postpone transitioning could face a higher risk of suicide.... Citing a statistic from the Youth Suicide Prevention Program, Ms Moreno noted over 50 percent of transgender youth will have had at least one suicide attempt by their 20th birthday."
The real issue is that "transgender youth" are being permitted to extort special medical treatment...merely by threatening to hurt themselves.
That is not healthy, neither for children, nor for the psychiatric profession.
Imagine a young American child, perhaps of above-average intelligence, who has from very early youth constantly exhibited an obsession with, say, French culture. He watches only French films and TV, listens only to French radio programs via the Internet, studies French on his own and practices with his tolerant parents (who try to keep up), follows French clothing styles -- you get the idea. Suddenly, he hits the age of seven and threatens his parents. "If I can't live in France, I'll start cutting up my face. I'll mutilate my arms. I'll slice off my ears. I may even kill myself."
What would normally happen then? The concerned parents would bring their child to a qualified and understanding child therapist who would then seek to address not the child's obsession with French culture, but his willingness to mutilate himself to get his way.
Here's a sample summary of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches from a Wikipedia article on "self-harm":
"Psychiatric and personality disorders are common in individuals who self-harm and as a result self-harm may be an indicator of depression and/or other psychological problems.[8]... Diagnosis and treatment of the causes of self-harm is thought by many to be the best approach to treating self-harm.[11] But in some cases, particularly in clients with a personality disorder, this is not very effective, so more clinicians are starting to take a DBT (dialectic behavior therapy) approach in order to reduce the behavior itself." The traditional -- and correct -- therapeutic method is to identify and remediate the source of a child's willingness to self-mutilate. It is NOT the traditional, or correct, method, to give the child everything he or she wants, just because "they might try to hurt themselves otherwise".
There is no reliable psychotherapist on the planet who would say, "Statistics prove that 50 percent of very young children obsessed with foreign cultures try to kill themselves at least once by the time they're 20 years old. Therefore, I recommend strongly that you either ship your child off to a foreign country, or else uproot your lives here and re-settle in a location of your very young child's choice." Because young children possess such great ability of discernment. Right?
Of course no sane therapist would make such a recommendation. The urge to self-mutilate and self-destroy is implicitly indicative of a profound emotional imbalance that generates self-hatred and the impulse to manipulate (abuse) others.
Normal therapeutic practice moves to restore the fullness of self-acceptance that is realized in a healthy individual, and in many cases it doesn't take any kind of medication to accomplish this. Caving in to threats of self-mutilation, by giving an extortionist whatever he or she wants, is ethically, morally, and professionally wrong, but probably professionally illegal as well.
In the case of "transgender youth", an entirely separate double-standard is being established: let your child go wherever he or she wishes to go, without guidance and without question. When children are the ones calling the shots, merely by threatening to hurt themselves, something has gone profoundly wrong, and the inherent purpose of Parenting is fundamentally challenged.
